Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768), the founder of classical archaeology and modern art history, was born in Stendal on 9 December 1717 and spent his childhood and youth here. As the son of a poor shoemaker, he struggled through the hardships of everyday life in constant need of money. At the same time, however, his inquisitiveness and his striving for education already fell on fertile ground here - he found patrons and institutions in Stendal that laid the foundation for his astonishing later career.
